Elements of a Great Gas Grill
The basics under the hood of a gas grill is more simple than you may think. First there are burners to create heat. Above them you will find some type of system to spread the heat from the burners(flavorized bars, lava rock, etc.) Above those are the cooking grates. Look under the hood of your gas grill and see if you can identify these parts.
The cooking System
Generally better grills have two or more separate burners. These allow greater control of heat. Cheaper grills have only one burner shaped like an H or a bar, some with one control, some may have two. Grills with one burner do not allow you to control heat as you can with grills with multiple burners, and may result in a cold spot in your food.
BTUs (British Thermal Units)
BTUs are not a measure of cooking power. They indicate the volume of gas a grill can burn. Just as in a car there are more efficient systems. Sometimes less is more. Too many BTUs can damage the burners and reduce the life of the grill. In general the larger the grill the more BTUs it will require.
Solid Construction
A well-built grill should be sturdy and feel solid. A poorly made grill will wiggle or flex. If a grill isn't solid on the sales floor its not going to get any sturdier on the way home. Be sure to buy a solid grill that doesn't wiggle any. Wiggle is bad!
Safety
A grill of quality lights effortlessly, controls heat easily, and has handle that do not heat up.
Life Time Warranty
This is what you should look for if possible. Typically the better the grill, the more the manufacturer is willing to back up their product. Saving money is great but don't sacrifice quality.
