There are huge selections of sofas available and consumers can be overwhelmed with choices when trying to buy. Upholstery is often chosen purely for its look or for its comfort, and the way it is made and the quality of materials used are often overlooked. Care should be taken when choosing a new sofa, and a few simple guidelines will help you to make the right choice.

Comfort

Most would agree that if its not comfortable its not coming home with me. Sofas can vary greatly in shape and size, and the depth of the seat, the type of cushions, and the shape and angle of the back, will all affect the comfort. Allow plenty of time to try various sofas before purchasing, as comfort is very individual and will vary depending on your height, shape and size. Try before you buy!!

Upholstery Fabrics

Upholstery fabrics has a lot to do with comfort, but you must keep in mind that upholstery fabrics can vary greatly in terms of wear. This is the part of the sofa that receives the most contact, and the durability of the fabric will depend upon its construction and fibre contents. The durability of an upholstery fabric is not proportional to its price, and fabric protection treatment is recommended on many fabrics. The majority of fabrics are upholstered to the sofa, but some sofas are available with removable loose covers for cleaning.

Sofa Size

Your choice of sofa will depend on the size of your room. Decide on how many sofas you require and the maximum size of each sofa to fit the space. Most sofas are available in three sizes, so make sure you measure carefully before you make your final choice. Also consider access to the room where you are planning to place your new sofa. Its no good buying a sofa and finding you cannot get it through the door!

Sofas are generally available with two types of back cushions.

Seat Cushions

There are three main fillings used for seat cushions. These are foam, feather and fibrefill. Foam tends to be firmer and retains its shape, while feather and fibre seat cushions are much softer and more relaxed. These will, however, need regular ‘plumping up’ to keep their shape.

• All sofa seat and back cushions should be turned regularly, and plumped up to retain their shape.
• Lightly vacuum your sofas upholstery using an attachment on a regular basis.
• Avoid sitting on the front edges or on the arms.
• Keep pets off your sofa, and avoid snagging the fabric with belt buckles, jewellery or other sharp objects.
• Have your sofa professionally cleaned.
• If accidental spillage occurs, take professional advice. Do not use detergents and always blot the excess liquid without rubbing it into the fabric.
• In the case of leather, never place the sofa next to a radiator.
• Leather should be cleaned using a slightly damp cloth, and only recommended specialist leather care products should be used.
• Leather is very resilient and hard wearing, and over time, it can develop a pleasing patina, which is part of its charm.
